Any budding nature photographers out there? I just received this note from Harriet West who is involved with a major photography award and thought I'd pass the info on:
"The Sony World Photography Awards are the largest, global photography competition and is open to both amateurs and professionals. Now in its second year, the awards are the ‘Oscars of the photographic world’, working with the leading photographers in the world and provide a platform on which photographers of all ability can launch themselves.
New for 2009, the awards are working with The Prince’s Rainforest Project (PRP) which was launched by HRH the Prince of Wales in 2007 to help conserve the rainforests of the world which are rapidly dwindling. We hope to increase awareness of The Prince’s Rainforests Project and to build a better understanding of the importance of rainforests via photography.
I hope that it may be of some interest to you to hear that the amateur strand of The PRP award has just been extended to 28 February 2009. Each amateur photographer may submit up to three images which either show what the rainforest means to them or which highlights the effect of deforestation on their life.
Commended images entered will be exhibited in Cannes during the week long Festival at The Sony World Photography Awards and may also be used by The Prince’s Rainforests Project in their future work.
Professional photographers have also been asked to submit their portfolios which showcase their environmental or social documentary photojournalism skills. The professional winner will receive funding to photograph the rainforests of the world and the impact of deforestation for three months. The resulting images will receive a global exhibition and will form part of a book highlighting the situation of the world's rainforests and will be announced on 3 February 2009.
